Information about scale expectations
- Judges will choose two (2) of the following four (4) scales for students to perform FROM MEMORY: F, Bb, Eb, Ab
- Scales will all be graded based on a performance of one octave. Students who perform one octave perfectly will receive 5 points out of 5 possible points.
- However, if students play additional octaves successfully, "extra credit" will be awarded for the judge. For example, if a student plays his/her 'F Scale' two octaves, then could receive 7 points out of 5 possible points.
- THEREFORE, even though only one octave is "required", most clarinets who make the ensemble will conceivably be playing their scales at least two octaves to compete for a higher overall score.
- Percussionists are required to play their major scales two octaves.
- All students will play a two octave chromatic scale FROM MEMORY. The following requirements are transposed for the instrument:
- Flutes*, Bassoons, all low brass, Horns: F-F
- Oboes, all Saxophones, Bb Clarinets*: C-C
- Bass Clarinets, Trumpets: G-G
- Percussion: Bb
- *extra credit may be awarded to flute and clarinet students who perform their chromatic scale according to the three octave All-State requirements.
